The presence of too many private institutions in the Higher Education sector has minimised the chances of the poor people from getting higher education.Only 6-8% of the population of India attained education at the higher levels. This observation was made by Prof. A.Gnanam in the session 'Dialectics of Teaching and Research'. The goal is to make higher education accessible to any student who shows desire and commitment to learn. without any financial or faith related constraints. These together make higher education the provider of `public good'.
In recent decades, globalization and liberalization policies and the unprecedented expansion of knowledge through conscious effort brought education to center stage. It has to cope with the demands of quality and relevant education and the human resources in the content of knowledge explosion and the advent of knowledge driven economy. There is an unprecedented demand for higher education as it has become the gateway for economic prosperity of the individuals and nations, Prof.Gnanam added.
